Scripture to Remember When Temptation Comes
When Jesus faced Satan in the wilderness, He didn't rely on willpower, clever arguments, or His own strength. Three times the enemy dangled the bait. Three times Jesus responded the same way: "It is written."
The enemy's lures look good. They're designed to, but hidden in every temptation is a hook. The Word of God, hidden in your heart and brought to mind by the Holy Spirit, exposes the lie and helps you walk away in the freedom Christ has already won.
If the Son of God used Scripture to fight, how much more should we?
This list is designed to equip you with verses for the battles you'll actually face. Pick the categories that match your struggles. Memorize one verse at a time. And when temptation dangles the bait, do what Jesus did: pick up your Sword.
The Foundation: How Jesus Fought
Matthew 4:4
"But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."
Matthew 4:7
"Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God."
Matthew 4:10
"Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve."
When Tempted by Lust or Sexual Sin
The bait: Pleasure without consequence. Fulfillment without commitment.
The hook: Broken trust, shame, and distance from God.
1 Corinthians 6:18-20
"Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's."
Job 31:1
"I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?"
2 Timothy 2:22
"Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart."
When Tempted by Anger or Bitterness
The bait: Justified outrage. The satisfaction of being right.
The hook: Broken relationships, hardened heart, and ground given to the enemy.
Ephesians 4:26-27
"Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil."
James 1:19-20
"Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God."
Proverbs 15:1
"A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger."
When Tempted by Fear or Anxiety
The bait: Control. If you worry enough, you can prevent disaster.
The hook: Sleepless nights, stolen peace, and a life lived small.
Isaiah 41:10
"Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness."
2 Timothy 1:7
"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."
Philippians 4:6-7
"Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
When Tempted by Pride or Self-Reliance
The bait: Independence. You don't need anyone—especially not God telling you what to do.
The hook: Isolation, blindness to your own faults, and a fall you never saw coming.
Proverbs 16:18
"Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall."
James 4:6
"But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble."
Philippians 2:3
"Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves."
When Tempted by Greed or Discontentment
The bait: More will finally be enough. This next thing will satisfy.
The hook: A life spent chasing, never arriving, missing what you already have.
Hebrews 13:5
"Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee."
1 Timothy 6:6-8
"But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content."
Matthew 6:33
"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."
When Tempted to Give Up or Despair
The bait: Rest from the struggle. Just stop trying.
The hook: Abandoning the harvest right before it comes.
Galatians 6:9
"And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not."
Isaiah 40:31
"But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint."
Romans 8:28
"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."
When Tempted by Doubt
The bait: Intellectual honesty. You're just asking questions.
The hook: a faith that never grows roots.
Mark 9:24
"And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief."
Romans 10:17
"So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."
Hebrews 11:1
"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."
When Tempted to Lie or Deceive
The bait: Protection. A small lie keeps the peace.
The hook: A web that grows, trust that erodes, and a character that crumbles.
Proverbs 12:22
"Lying lips are abomination to the Lord: but they that deal truly are his delight."
Colossians 3:9-10
"Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him."
Ephesians 4:25
"Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another."
The Promise: God Provides a Way Out
The enemy wants you to believe you're trapped. That there's no escape. That you've already lost.
But God promises something different.
1 Corinthians 10:13
"There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it."
James 4:7
"Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."
1 John 4:4
"Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world."
How to Use This Arsenal
1. Identify your battlefield.
Which temptation hits you most often? Start there.
2. Pick one verse.
Don't try to memorize everything at once. Master one weapon before adding another.
3. Write it down.
Put it on a notecard, your phone lock screen, your bathroom mirror—somewhere you'll see it daily.
4. Say it aloud.
When temptation comes, don't just think the verse. Say it.
5. Pray the Word.
Ask the Holy Spirit to bring these verses to mind when you need them most.
The enemy is a fisherman. He studies you. He knows what bait works. He's patient.
But you don't have to bite.
Temptation isn't a sign of weakness and being tempted is not a sin. Even Jesus was tempted. The question isn't whether you'll face it, t's whether you'll be ready when you do.
The enemy wants you to believe you're powerless. That you'll always give in. That this time will be no different.
But you have something he can't overcome: the living Word of God.
So hide it in your heart. Speak it with your mouth. See the hook behind the bait, and take the way of Escape. (1 Cor 10:13)
