Perhaps God has been speaking to you while you have been worshiping at Cowee Baptist. Here are answers to a few common questions you may have on uniting with our fellowship, accepting Christ, and baptism.
Is God leading you to unite with our fellowship – to become a member of Cowee Baptist Church?
When He does, this is how you may respond:
- Profession of faith. During the invitation hymn, at the close of the sermon, you are encouraged to come forward and tell the pastor that you wish to receive Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior and you are willing to follow Christ’s example and instruction to be baptized.CLICK HERE for more information on accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior
- By transfer of letter. During the invitation hymn, at the close of the sermon, you are encouraged to come forward and tell the pastor that you know God wants you to unite with this fellowship. You are already a Christian but your membership is elsewhere.
- By statement of faith. During the invitation hymn, at the close of the sermon, you are encouraged to come forward and tell the pastor you know God wants to unite you with this fellowship. Your church membership elsewhere may not be transferable (i.e. the church has no records). You would be coming as a Christian – but on statement of your faith.
Church membership is a blessing, and you may have questions before you make this important decision or you may have concerns about walking down the aisle to meet with the pastor at the close of a worship service. If so, you are encouraged and have the freedom to contact the pastor or deacon of the week after church, visit the church office, or speak with them via phone or email.
At the time of invitation in a worship service or at some earlier point in the week, speak with the pastor. After talking with the pastor, your decision will be publicly affirmed by the church. Shortly thereafter the pastor will schedule a date for you to be baptized. Then all you will have to do is show up on that day with a change of clothes.
You are to be baptized if you accept or have accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior.
Because Jesus commanded it! Baptism is a believer’s step of faith and demonstration of obedience. It presents a picture of the gospel and a public testimony to others while giving us an important faith milestone to remember.
If your previous baptism did not follow the teachings of the Bible, yes. Many people, upon discovering they were not a believer when baptized (i.e. they may have been baptized as an infant or at the prompting of their parents, not the Holy Spirit) ask to be baptized as a believer. Also, those who were not baptized by the biblical mode of immersion, which symbolizes baptism’s meaning, ask to be immersed in the baptismal water.
